Darkness has descended onto the streets of Great Britain. And in this darkness the streets that house it’s citizens and people go to work have plunged into a chaos where the lawless rule, striking fear into the most vulnerable.

Who will stop these criminals from rioting, looting, terrorising communities and burning down people’s places of work and homes? A constrained and lacklustre police force that on their own simply cannot cope with the volume and expansion of the spreading violence? Whitehall, with the politicians who are responsible for marginalising those that have chosen to walk on the dark side?

Or, perhaps, it could be you. It could be me. It could be all of us!

In neighbourhoods across London and the latest cities to be subject to this crime, people are uniting in the cause to defend their communities from these thugs. But the answer is not just in picking up arms to protect ourselves from harm, theft and vandalism. It is the duty of friends, parents, siblings and other relatives to appeal to the human side which exists in all those that chose to take up crime.

And from us all there may emerge superheroes. Masked vigilantes, who will use powers of reasoning & persuasion, or simply frighten the shit out hooded thugs, that they might be deterred from evil. Dark knights, like the ones you will read about in this post, who will once again let us see the light.

1. Motor Mouth

As Motor Mouth’s name suggests, he is all talk, but he has “all the action to back it up”.

When riots broke out in Oakland, following the conviction of involuntary man slaughter of a police man (a case tinged with racial overtones), Motor Mouth organised himself and other local Real Life Heroes into action.

“We went to Oakland, we defended its businesses, we protected its people, and were bold in what we did. The Bay is our home, and we stood our ground and stood up for it.”

I don’t know about you, but if this guy was to tap me on the shoulder for a word in the street, he’d have my ears. Our cities are in need of people like Motor Mouth to talk youth out of crime.

2. Urban Avenger

Urban Avenger is a man who likes to be in the thick of it: “even when I’m not in my costume as a visual deterrent for crime, if I see something going down, I will act. Anytime, anywhere.”

His attire, not that far removed from that of our hooded hooligans might allow him to infiltrate their organised ranks and persuade some of them to lay down their baseball bats and petrol bombs.

Are you part of a group who is involved in rioting or looting and don’t feel right about it? Do what you can to make your peers see sense!

3. Samaritan

Samaritan is a Real Life Superhero living and working in New York City, where he does all kinds of outreach work involving the elderly, children and youth groups amongst others.

“For me, these acts of kindness are the province of heroes. Being a hero for me is a battle with my human nature—to put others ahead of myself. It’s a constant struggle that I know I haven’t quite mastered, but I know that when you stop trying, that’s when you lose sight of what you’re about,”

Sometimes confronting confrontational people can be the worst tactic. If you come across the disaffected youth who have been involved in crime, try killing them with kindness, it might help to disarm them and eventually see that there are people who care about them.

4. Soundwave and Jetstorm

Soundwave and Jetstorm are not allowed to patrol the streets without an adult accompanying them, or after their bed time, but that does not mean they can’t put their superpowers to good use, which they do in their charity and outreach work.

“If you can walk, you can help somebody out,” said Soundwave… and “Anyone can do it. Except babies, of course”, agrees Jetstorm.

If these two were to confront you as you are about to loot your local Curry’s, would it not make you think twice about what your little brothers or sisters, who so looks up to you would think about your actions?

5. Death’s Head Moth

Death’s Head Moth splits his time between confronting violent criminals in the street and doing outreach work.

“There is no sanction for evil. And the one weapon necessary to defend against it, is justice.”

I sincerely hope he removes the mask before visiting sick children in hospitals… Not the kind a guy I would like jumping out on me in a dark alley, which will serve him well in confronting criminals…

In this situation it might remind some recreational rioters that they are just scared children looking for attention.

6. Mr Xtreme

He may look like a cop gone sticker crazy on his riot gear, but Mr Xtreme is a real life Super Hero who himself has been a victim of crime and has seen some terrible things in his life.

“I wanted to do something positive, heroic and also as a way of protest against indifference in society. People are being victimized, and I feel that someone has to take a stand. Someone has to stand up and put a stop to it.”

Like Mr Xtreme, as well as standing up against crime, why not try to help those that turn to crime because they feel they have nothing, by campaigning on their behalf for things like more jobs in the local area and government funding for youth centers and clubs to keep them out of trouble?

7. Nyx

And this one may look like she belongs in street corners, which of course Nyx does frequent, but as a Real Life Super Hero active in the New York City and New Jersey areas where she mostly does outreach work for the homeless.

The best quote of her I could find is a bit more obscure than the rest:

“Like the night, I cannot be proven or disproven to certain degrees; and also much like the night, when morning comes, there will be no trace of me.”

Now, I’m not quite sure what that means, other than you’re not likely to see her during the day and that that may or may not be proven to be right, but what I am sure about is that Nyx has a couple of assets that may well help distract young men from crime.

Ladies… do what you can to help the needy in your communities… and show young men who might otherwise be involved in crime that there is much more comfort to be had in a warm, loving bosom.

The other night I watched Michael Moore’s ‘Capitalism: A love story and I was amazed at how ignorant I was to the extent that Ronald Reagan and the Bushes were just puppets to the people that really called the shots in the US.

Then my thoughts turned to the Conservative Government that we have just “elected” in this country.

The vast majority of us in the UK are working-class. Are we as retarded as the American Republicans who elected George W Bush to be their president not once, but twice?!

Our friends across the pond saw sense and elected in Obama, a president who would represent the interests of the people, not that of the corporations. But I guess we were hit by the clever-dumb balance this time.

Oh well, at least we already have a national health system. (The Tories did try to block that when Labour introduced it by the way)

Campaigning against a Tory government, shortly after campaigning against the Digital Economy Bill (#DEBILL), which was rushed through parliament during a wash up before the general election.

There was a lot of talk before the election about whether this would be an “Internet election”. Whether it would follow the precedent set by last year’s American presidential election which was fought and won online, thanks to a colossal Social Media Strategy.

It was clear very early on, however,  that TV and printed media are still the election deciders here in the UK  - and Rupert Murdoch’s media properties fought hard for a conservative government.

Not an “Internet election” in that sense then, but it was to me in another way.  The Digital Economy Bill got everyone online hooked on politics.

The controversy surrounding draconian measures that could see ISP’s, at the request of copyright owners, disconnect you from the web if your network was found to have been used to download copyrighted material illegally – even if it wasn’t you who did it….

The revelations that, the prince of darkness, Lord Mandelson, the man putting all his political might behind the campaign to get this legislation passed had been wined and dined in a yacht in Corfu by music industry execs, and that the Tory shadow chancellor, George Osbourne, was there too….

The fact that the first draft was so one sided, that it might as well have been written by the Music and Movie industries….

To us internet geeks, this was more compelling than an American conspiracy-action-drama. And all of us that care for internet freedoms, pushed along by great campaigners like 38 degrees, got involved by making sure that as many people as possible knew what was going down and lobbied their MP’s to oppose this bill.

But, on this first round at least, we were fighting a losing battle. The DEBill was voted through and became DEAct (Digital Economy Act) after a second reading.

How could this happen?

Too many of the MP’s who are elected by us to represent us in parliament, simply do not understand the digital world. Some of those who understand a bit more felt pressured by their party leadership to vote for the passage of the bill during the second reading.  And those who are knowledgeable about the online world and the need for it too be freed of creative restrictions, were simply too few and struggled to make their voice heard.

One MP who does know about digital matters, and fought to make it a fairer act for the people was Tom Watson, former Minister for Digital Inclusion. This is what he had to say after the passage of the bill….

With the DEAct, and the grossest lack of democracy witnessed by most of us out of the way, the election campaign was next.

The vast majority in the UK won’t have followed or been concerned by the DEBill and instead gathered their views from publications like the Sun and broadcasters like Sky News, not from blogs or twitter.. which is possibly the biggest reason that we now have a Conservative lead government.

But online, the Liberal Democrats got their biggest gain. Partly because of Nick Clegg’s performance on the televised debates, but mostly because of their opposing of the second reading of the DEBill (even though they initially backed it and caved in to public pressure later) and their stance on the matter during the campaign.

So where are we now with the Digital Economy Act?

The fight is not over. Many politicians are hoping that we will forget about this. But people are campaigning hard to have this Act repealed.

The Lib-Dems have apparently voted almost unanimously within their party to push to have the DEAct repealed, but the Tories and most of Labour won’t want this. That is why it is important for everyone to put pressure on their MP to push for repeal. You can lobby your MP through the Open Rights Group site here. It only takes two minutes.

Here are some of the reasons why I think the Digital Economy Act is Bad…

1. The DEACT serves only to protect the status quo and old business models. It is a block to creative development and creative business models of the future. For example, I have a vision of the music industry becoming a much more open marketplace, in which fans have a much greater choice and many more artists are able to make a living.

2. Future business models will involve free content and monetization through merchandising, touring, sponsorships.

3. There is absolutely no point to the TV and Radio digital switch-over (especially not Radio which is 4 years away). Focus on building the infrastructure to deliver super-fast Internet to every home in the country, and IP will become the standard for TV and Radio.

4. If, with all the bureaucracy and legal advice, the political parties can get caught up in copyright infringement when replicating images in a creative way, then what chance have the rest of us got?

UPDATE:

New culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, who lead to Tory efforts to pass the bill, has today said that the coalition government will not be repealing the DEAct. That means that it is now even more important that as many people as possible put preasure on their MP’s to push for this to happen.

In 2005 British government made the progressive and human step of legislating against fox hunting – the cruel and barbaric pastime of privileged, rural toffs*.

Unfortunately, the British Conservative party (lead by privileged toffs) are looking likely to regain power at the next general election, and leader David Cameron has already stated that he will try to scrap the hunting ban and take us back to the cruel age.

If you are lucky enough to never have come across a fox hunter, here is one being interviewed by Borat (watch the 2 videos)…

David Cameron’s argument is that the hunting ban is a bad piece of legislation and that we would be better off without it. Because as fox hunting – despite being illegal – still happens, it makes a mockery of the legal system.

That is… despite it being against the law, his toff pals still do it… while sticking a middle finger up to government…

But if they are in power then they would be sticking the finger up at themselves, therefore a hunting ban would just make them look even more stupid.

How about some police brutality?

The journalist commentating on this one appears to justify the heavy handedness of the police on the women lifting her bike towards them. Maybe I’m missing something, but I hardly think these big boy cops should feel even slightly intimidated by a woman half their size kicking her bike up in frustration when she is being pushed in different directions by these bullies.

Maybe I’m missing something, in which case you’ll have to let me know in the comments.

If you are an American cop – don’t feel singled out. Here in the UK it’s just as bad…

One day a florist goes to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he asked about his bill and the barber replies, ‘I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.’

The Florist was pleased and left the shop.

When the barber goes to open his shop the next morning there is a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill the barber again replies, ‘I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.’

The cop is happy and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open his shop  there is a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Later that day, a college professor comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill the barber again replies, ‘I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.’

The professor is happy and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open his shop  there is a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen different books  such as ‘How to Improve your Business’ and ‘Becoming more successful’.

Later that day, a Member of Parliament comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill the barber again replies, ‘I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.’

The MP is very happy and leaves the shop.

The next morning when the barber goes to open up, there are a dozen Members of Parliament lined up waiting for a free haircut.
